PLANT PROPAGATION FOR BEGINNERS
Have you ever had a plant that just looks so beautiful that it makes you want to have many of them in your home? Having a home filled with gorgeous plants is a dream for plant lovers. You can permanently save time and buy but, you can save the money for that plant that you’ve always wanted to get because you can just simply propagate them. In doing this, you’ll learn more about plants, and you can also multiply existing plants to grow in your home or even give them to your friends and family as a gift.
For new plant parents, propagating is scary. But once you have mastered it, you can propagate as many plants as you would like.
There are several methods of propagating. It can be from cuttings to division to layering and grafting. A cutting may be from a stem, a leaf, or the root. The cutting is placed in a container with a wet paper towel to keep it moist until you are ready to plant. With division, you simply break the plant into two or more pieces keeping the root and the crown intact. On the other hand, Layering is the process in which you let the stem of a plant grow new roots while it is still attached to the mother plant. It is usually done by bending the stem of the plant and putting it in the ground. The last one is grafting, which is considered one of the complex types of propagation. In this process, you will be taking parts from different plants to form a new plant hoping for the qualities of the parts plant that you put together to be all present in the new plant.
Each plant has a specific way of propagating. Below are just a few examples of favored plants and how to reproduce or propagate them.
The Monstera plant is one of the most popular houseplants that are truly magnificent. I can never blame someone for wanting more. The good thing is that this plant is easy to propagate, and we can even get to choose from several ways to do the propagation.
The simplest one is stem cutting. For this, you would want to use a clean-cutting tool and make a clean cut just below the plant node to avoid infecting or bruising the stem.
Once you have cut them off, you can either place the cuttings in a glass of clean water and wait for them to grow new roots or just put it directly in the soil and let it work its way from there.
You also have the option to propagate this plant via division. To do this, you’ll just simply have to take the plant out of its soil and carefully cut the roots into two plants with different roots to grow and multiply. Once cut, immediately place them in potted soil and be sure to put them where they can get bright indirect light.
And the last method of propagating Monstera is via Air Layering. The idea here is that you allow the roots to grow while still on the mother plant before cutting it. To do this, you will need a wet sphagnum moss not too damp but moist is good, then select a node from the Monstera where you want to propagate, then simply wrap the moss around the node with plastic wrap and secure it with a rope. You may want to check the plant and water the moss to keep it moist and to let it grow.
Just like the Monstera, the Jade plant is one of the plants that you would want to propagate and multiply. The plant is so easy to propagate you would end up doing it again and again.
You can propagate this plant by simply cutting closest to the stem node, ensuring that your stem cutting has 2-3 nodes with it and has a couple of healthy leaves. The size of the stem does not matter, but it is believed that cutting a larger stem will give you a higher chance of success. Once you finish cutting the stem, remove all the leaves at the bottom, leaving the top leaves only, then let it sit to dry for 3-5 days. Make sure you include the leaves you pulled out in the process. Doing this technique is a way to ensure that when your plant heals itself and not be susceptible to root rot once planted in the soil. After leaving it to dry out completely, you can now root your jade cutting. You can simply do this by planting it in the ground or sitting it on a container full of water until it develops new roots.
You can also propagate a jade plant using its leaves. You can do the same method as I mentioned earlier. You can simply place it in soil, let the end touch the soil, and just lay them down, and for the water method, you can allow roots to grow by putting them in a container with water making sure they are in an upright position.
The ZZ plant is another plant that is easy to propagate. It’s almost as easy as propagating succulents.
There are several ways to propagate this plant, one of which is through cutting. To do this, you just simply need to make a clean cut from the plant’s stem. Then, you can just directly plant it in soil or place it in water. And just like the Jade plant, you can also propagate with leaf-cutting; still using the same method with the stem cutting, you can place it directly on soil or a jar filled with water. When you do the water method, it usually takes time and will need a constant water change, but the good thing is that you can see the progress, unlike when placed in soil.
The last method is through the division method, wherein you just get the plant out of the soil and then separate one tube from which both root and stem are growing. After you take out the cutting, you will be placing it in direct soil to promote growth.
Like all the other methods mentioned above, the String of Hearts Propagation is easy. There are also several ways to do them, and you can go with whatever you feel the most comfortable doing.
For this plant’s propagation, as mentioned above, there are several ways to do it. You have two parts of plants you can take: through cuttings and the other through the tubers.
The cutting can be a stem or leaf that can either be placed in water or directly in the soil. To do this method, you’ll just need some clean scissors to snip off some of the plant’s vines, then place it in a jar full of water, wait for it to root, and then plant it. To do the soil method, use the same clean scissors, cut off some vine pieces, and stick the vine directly into the soil. Before doing this, make sure that you have removed all the bottom leaves to prevent rotting and affect the plant’s growth.
If you want to have a fuller string of hearts, you can do the butterfly method in which you cut the vine of each leaf line, leaving you with only two leaves per cutting that look similar to the butterfly—spreading the stem pieces to the soil to have fuller growth.
The last method is through the tubers. To do this, you can just cut off the tubers of the plant. These are the small round shape specimen that appears through the vine. Once you cut it off, you can just place it in a pot with soil, or you can keep the tuber on the main plant and just press it on the soil and wait for it to develop new roots.
The last plant example for propagation is the Peperomia Plant. And NO, just because this plant is final doesn’t mean that you will have a hard time propagating this plant. It’s as easy as all the methods mentioned above. For this plant, they can be propagated through stem cuttings and leaf cuttings. They can also be placed directly in the soil or in water to grow new roots until they are ready to be repotted.
