Pothos Plant - Everything You Need To Know

Pothos are known for having heart-shaped leaves and being fast-growing vines. Pothos may also be called devil’s ivy. They are very easy to take care of and one of the hardest plants to kill that’s why the name devil’s ivy emerged. They also have the ability to stay green even when they are kept in low-light condition areas. This is also the plant that is usually recommended for beginner plant parents as they are also forgiving even if you forget to water them.

Epipremnum Aureus are species of flowering plant in the Arum family, Araceae. It is native to the Society Islands of French Polynesia. They are considered one of the most popular plants for your home. They make a great decoration to your home when you place them on the table or hang them in your ceiling.

Aside from the fact that it can brighten up your home for they are gorgeous living accessory, these plants also takes care of us, they  work as great air purifiers  for they also remove toxins and chemicals in the air.

As mentioned above, Pothos are easy to take care of, and to prove that, here are some of their care tips.

For the Soil:

Any fast, well draining and high-quality soil is good for this plant. If the soil is not that quick draining, this might cause some problems to the plant.

In Watering:

Pothos plants do not like to be overwatered. They like to dry out between waterings. In order to check if they need watering, we can try the bottom watering by placing the plant in a bowl full of water or you can also use your fingers to check if they need water All you need to do is stick your finger in the soil atleast two inches in the pot and you can check if it feels moist or dry. Then, you will knowif they are thirsty or not.

For the Temperature:

These plants prefer areas with high humidity but their ideal temperature is around 60-80 degrees fahrenheit. They are also tolerant to drier temperatures, they are fine with it as long as they are not under direct harsh sunlight.

For the fertilizer:

Pothos are not much of a heavy feeder and does not require too much fertilizer. They only need little fertilizer to survive. A feeding of every 1-3 months is fine to keep them looking healthy.

Pruning:

Since Pothos are fast growers, their growth may be out of control but no need to worry you can always just trim the long growers to keep them more compact and full. If you want them hung, you can just let them be so they can trail down on their own. If you want them to vine on the opther hand,  you can still  just let them be but try to add something they can climb onto. .

Repotting:

Repotting Pothos is a very important process since this allows air to porperly incorporate in the soil. Also, you might sometimes find that the leaves of your pothos may become droopy which is also a sign that you need to repot the plant.

Cleaning:

Pothos tend to collect more dust than any other plants so best to frequently wipe the dust off the leaves of the plant to keep them clean. Also they can be visited by mealy bugs and other plant eating insects so its always good to spray insecticidal soap on the leaves every once in a while.

Propagating:

Pothos are quite easy to propagate, to do this all you need to do is take a clean cutting scissor and make a clean cut on the stem that you want to propagate. Once you have the stem cutting, you can simply put the cutting in a jar full of water and place the jar in an area that gets an adequate amount of bright, indirect light and wait for the roots to grow. Once you see that the roots are starting to appear, you can now place your rooted cutting into a small pot with soil.

Pothos have different types of varieties and different colors as well, to name a few of the popular ones, Golden Pothos, Satin Pothos and Silver Queen Pothos.

Golden Pothos are characterized by having heart-shaped leaves that has yellow variegation on its leaves. This is the most commonly sold type of pothos. Some leaves on this type may not have the yellow variegation which is considered normal, but when they are introduced to more light, the variegation eventually comes out.

Satin Pothos on the other hand have bigger and heart-shaped leaves. If the Golden Pothos has yellow variegation, the Satin Pothos has darker green leaves that is splashed with silver marks giving it a sophisticated look.

Snow Queen Pothos now are known for having leaves that are more white than green. There is still variegation on this plant its just that the variegation on this plant overpowers the natural color of the leaves.

Pothos are really beautiful plants that is perfect for beginners, so if ever your wondering what plants would be great to start with, Pothos is one of the safest way to go. Check them out here now!
