Variegated Monstera - What to Know and Why You Should Care
As much as I love looking at traditional all green plants, it's also lovely to look at some plants that have other colors as well. Of course, I am not referring to plants that have turned yellow because of different factors like overwatering, underwatering, not getting enough sunlight, the temperature being too hot or too cold, or not getting enough nutrition. I'm talking about one of those sophisticated-looking plants that naturally have color patches in them, some of the most famous are called variegated monsteras.
The Monstera comes in different types and sizes. We will only be presenting the four main types of the plant but before we have a deeper dive into those, let’s go ahead and see what variegated means.
In simple terms, variegation means the appearance of leaves having different colored zones that may also occur in the stem of a plant.
One of the many types of Variegated Monstera is the Monstera deliciosa Thai Constellation. It is named Thai Constellation because a genetic mutation produced it in a lab in Thailand. The cream-colored splotches are similar to the constellation. The variegation on this plant is genetically modified, so you do not need to worry about new leaves turning all green. The sizes can range from twelve inches up to thirty-six inches, and can grow to about eight feet in height.
Another type is what we call the Monstera Albo also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant. The color pattern of this plant can be white, green, and a mixture of both colors. The variegation on this Monstera is bloched combined with splotches as well. These plants can also produce pure white leaves; that is why some people call it the white variegated Monstera. They are known to be sold as small plants as it will take a very long time for this plant to mature. Compared to Monstera Thai Constellation, the leaves on this plant are more petite and usually around twelve inches. This Monstera plant is rare and quite expensive since it has the look of sophistication that can brighten up any area of the house you place it in.
This third plant is the Monstera deliciosa ‘Aurea’ (or ‘Marmorata'). With this plant, the variegation is typically much less compared to the two Monsteras mentioned above. And for the color instead of white or cream, the Monstera Aurea has color splotches on the yellowish side. The Monstera deliciosa ‘Aurea’ is also known as Marmorata because the marbling effect between the color green and yellow is present in this plant.
The last plant type is what we call the Mint Monstera. The variegation on this plant is mint green or white-green. It is the newest Monstera added to the family. And just like the Albo and Aurea, this also has an irregular color pattern of variegation that may appear on one leaf and not on the next.
All these plants are charming and beautiful in their own way. It is a perfect conversation piece for our fellow plant people and plant lovers out there. The rarity of this plant and its difficulty in growing is what makes it unique to other plants. Especially for some of these plants, the more they age and harden, the variegation becomes more noticeable.
So, Whether you are a beginner plant parent or someone who already has a plant collection in their home or garden, this plant is a must-have simply because, aside from it blending well with other plants, they can also make any part of the house much livelier. So adding it to your collection can do an excellent job in two different ways. One is that its characteristics can stand out from all the other plants in your house, making it more noticeable by you and your visitors, and it can also be a perfect fit for your indoor plant collection.
And to top that, These plants are also relatively easy to take care of check out this care guide on how to care for a Monstera. They can grow in lower light conditions, but it is still advisable to put them near a window to get good sunlight. These plants do not need you to water them every day, but just enough is fine to know that the soil is not entirely dried out. They are also known to be climbers, and you would usually find them attached to a piece of wood to help them grow upwards. In the jungle, these plants typically stick to a branch and work their way upward from there. Since they will only be needing less sunlight, we will not consider these plants as heavy feeders, which means they need less fertilizer.
As time goes by, more and more people want to have the variegated Monstera, which is one of the main reasons this plant is quite extravagant. Because of its rarity, it can be very hard to find a variegated Monstera.
The good news is a traditional Monstera is absolutely beautiful as well, and if you want to get yourself one of those you can order one today from Comfort Plants!
