Beginner Succulent and Cactus Care Guide + 5 Easy Steps to Take Care of Your Plants
1. Plants Need Light
While Succulents and Cactus are very easy plants to care for, they still need light. On average they will do best with at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.
Newly planted Succulents and Cacti can be harmed if put into direct sunlight, coming out of a dark package it is best to slowly introduce them to their home if it gets a lot of direct sunlight. Don’t worry, they love direct light after they have been gradually introduced.
Succulents and Cactus are hardy, but you still must be cautious that the room temperature does not get too low. Succulents and Cactus alike, can't withstand being under 60 degrees fahrenheit for an extended period of time.
2. Rotate Often
Direct sun are Succulents’ and Cacti’s best friend, be fair to the whole plant and rotate which leaves get the most direct sun. This will prevent one side of the plant flourishing, and the other struggling.
3. Follow Mother Nature’s Course
Succulents and Cacti grow the most when they get the most in the spring and summer. This is when the Sun is most suitable for growing. During these times they will gladly drink more water than in the fall and winter when they are hibernating. To know when it is the right time to water you plant, is by inserting your finger about 1.5” into the soil. If the soil is completely dry, give them a drink! Be careful not to over water, overwatering can harm your plant. It is always better to under water a Cactus or a Succulent than to overwater.
4. Water the Soil is the Key
When watering your plants, water the soil thoroughly until it flows through the drainage holes. If you have a pot that does not have drainage holes water it much less. it's best to soak the soil until water runs out of the drainage holes. If you can avoid it, do not water the leaves of Succulents or Cacti.
5. Keep 'em Clean
Over time your plants will accumulate dust, dirt, and who knows what else, don’t be alarmed, get a small paper towel and wipe them clean, when needed you can dampen the cloth.
