Chinese Money Plant - Plant Care + Why Your Home Needs One

The Chinese Money Plant is truly an eye-catcher. Its distinctive look of floating-like and round-shaped leaves makes it an excellent addition to your indoor plant collection, but if you don’t have one yet, this is still one of the best plants to start with as it is easy to take care of and grows fast.

If you’re ever wondering why it is called the money plant, this plant is originally from China, and the appearance of the leaves taking the shape of a coin is mainly why.

Pilea peperomioides

The Chinese Money plant is also known for its names, Pancake plant or Missionary Plant, and its scientific name is Pilea Peperomioides.  This plant originated from the nettle Urticaceae family.

The Chinese Money Plant is known for having green and shiny coin-like shaped leaves. And, unlike other plants, the petiole or the stalk that attaches the leaves to the plant stem is near the center instead of being connected to the edge of the plate or at the main branch of the plant.

If you do not have this pretty Chinese Money Plant yet? Here are the top reasons why you should get one.

  1. It is effortless to care for
These plants are some of the best low-maintenance plants. They are not such drama queens that require attention all the time. However, since they are pretty astonishing, I would not blame you if you take a look at them more than you should. But if you can’t help it, look. There is no harm in doing so.
  2. They are Lucky!
The Chinese Money Plant is considered a good feng shui when well taken care of. They are known for bringing good luck and fortune to its owner. It is also believed that placing a coin in the plant’s soil will boost the money luck for the household!
  3. They Are Great Air Purifiers
Having a lot of this plant can be beneficial, as it can help sanitize the air by removing toxins and pollutants.
  4. Easy To Grow
From what I mentioned above, how having multiple Chinese Money Plants can help purify the air. You don’t need to worry about buying them a lot of times. They are easy to propagate, and before you know it, you will be counting more than just one Chinese Money Plant.
  5. Perfect Gift
Since I already mentioned that the Chinese Money Plant is easy to grow, it also makes them the perfect gift for your loved ones. Who doesn’t like plants? I get it that some may be scared of the responsibility, but the good thing is when you shop at https://comfortplants.com/ you will get a care guide along with the plant for an easy care.
  6. Safe for pets
Good news! This plant is considered 100% pet-friendly. They do not contain toxins which make them safe for dogs, cats, other pets, and humans. So if you have a furry buddy or a child who likes to take a nibble of everything new he or she sees, this is the perfect plant for you.
  7. You can choose the style however you want it to grow
The Chinese Money plant can grow in three different ways, and yes, you get to choose how it appears. There are three ways.

Tall And Straight

To achieve this kind of look for your plant, you will need to grow it with overhead lighting, if not possible, what you can do is rotate the plant’s position where sunlight is present every week, doing this means that your entire plant should have turned fully gotten their sunlight time in a month.

Compact But Full

If you want to keep your plant bushy, at an average height, and not grow taller, you will need to keep the offset of the plant next to its mother and not cut them. Doing this will cause it to grow more and give the plant a fuller look.

The Onesided

This look is by far the simplest to achieve. You do not need to move or rotate the plant. Just leave it as it is then you will see that all the stems and leaves will go on and face the other side where the sunlight is at till all of them are facing in one direction.

Care tips to keep your Chinese Money plant healthy

You can grow the Chinese Money Plant under two light conditions. The lower light condition gives them longer petioles, and in a higher light, it shortens down. Make sure we do not put them directly under the sunlight as they can easily get burnt.

When it comes to watering, it usually depends on the temperature of your location. Higher temperature requires you to water the plant more frequently, just enough to keep the soil moist, but you can lay off the water when it gets colder. When in doubt, you can always check the leaves if they are a bit slack, as this may be a sign of overwatering or underwatering. If the soil is dry, it is under-watered. If it is moist and leaves are limp, it is overwatered.

A Standard All-purpose potting mix is all our plants will ever need. Good drainage is also a plus, as this will help avoid root rot.

The Chinese Money Plants are not heavy feeders as well. They produce a fair amount of growth and multiple plant pups, which means they will need the feeding occasionally, but not too much. A standard houseplant or cacti-based fertilizer is all it needs.
