Why Houseplants Make You Happier

Ever since the pandemic started, people have been under quarantine and kept themselves busy and entertained by doing various things. Some people have decided to clean their pools, remodel parts of their homes, or have engaged in a new hobby. One of the hobbies that most women and men also have engaged in is indoor gardening.

This hobby is one of the most unique and fun hobbies that can be enjoyed by different age groups and both genders well. Plus, the pursuit of indoor gardening is known to improve the health and well-being of those who engage in it.

Plus, it is a hobby that brings good things for people, and not only that, the plants are also beneficial for humankind.  Here are some of the reasons why it is considered a healthy hobby.

1. Plants improve the quality of air in your room.

Several plants could clean the air around your house. According to NASA’s study, “The leaves, roots, soil, and associated microorganisms of plants have been evaluated as a possible means of reducing indoor air pollutants. Additionally, a novel approach of using plant systems for removing high concentrations of indoor air pollutants such as cigarette smoke, organic solvents, and possibly radon has been designed from this work. This air filter design combines plants with an activated carbon filter. The rationale for this design, which evolved from wastewater treatment studies, is based on moving large volumes of contaminated air through an activated carbon bed where smoke, organic chemicals, pathogenic microorganisms (if present), and possibly radon are absorbed by the carbon filter. Plant roots and their associated microorganisms then destroy the pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and organic chemicals, eventually converting all of these air pollutants into new plant tissue. It is believed that the decayed radon products would be taken up the plant roots and retained in the plant tissue.”

2. Plants help reduce stress level.

Taking care of low-maintenance living organisms such as plants is known to reduce the stress level of someone. It is believed that engaging in outdoor activities where you primarily interact with nature can reduce stress levels, and taking care of plants does the same and makes you enjoy the activity more.

3. Having plants are considered therapeutic.

It is recommended for those who have mental illnesses to keep at least one indoor plant as it helps reduce anxiety and depression. It is not only recommended but prescribed as well. Also. it is believed that once a patient is in a recovery period, they are known to recover faster when they can see green sceneries than those who are just stuck in the hospital room and cannot make it out.

4. Improves Work Productivity

Plants create a more positive environment and make people more focused on what they are doing. No wonder some offices are spending on adding more plants inside the company for their employees to see and improve the production of work and creativity.

Now that you have read some of the benefits of why you should get an indoor plant, are you ready to become a plant parent?

A plant parent gets a small indoor houseplant and treats it like their own child. They take care of the plant wholeheartedly, and all they want is for their plants to grow and live for as long as they can. Several plants are very easy to care for, which is perfect for beginner plant parents.

Becoming a plant parent has been one of the top trends, especially for the millennial generation. One of the reasons may be because the younger generation has put off having children and has grown interested in growing plants indoors and treating them as a child of their own.

Plants are very easy to take care of. They do not require 24/7 attention. All they need to survive are three things, sunlight. Sunlight is one of the sources of their growth, but of course, it would be complete without water. These two are the most crucial factors for their development. The last one is as important as well, which is the fertilizer. Fertilizers act as food for the plants; but, they don’t need them very often. Just because it’s plant food doesn’t mean that they need it three times a day. The frequency depends on the type of plant if they are heavy feeders or light feeders only. Some may need it 2 - 3 times a week, some may just need it once, and some don’t need them at all. Although it is still possible to grow plants without fertilizer, we recommend that we give fertilizer to our plants to become healthy and grow beautifully.
